We source our seaweed along the pristine South African coast through responsible, traceable harvesting, working closely with local partners who understand these ecosystems.
Over time, we aim to complement wild harvesting with on-land seaweed farming, building controlled, reliable cultivation systems that secure year-round supply. By combining coastal sourcing with resilient local partnerships and future on-land farms, we create a stable, sustainable raw material base for our agar and other seaweed-derived ingredients.
Coastal Responsibility
Our motivation at NK Biosolutions stems from a simple conviction: that this natural abundance should generate lasting value for South Africa, not simply feed global supply chains from a distance.
We are building toward a model of responsible coastal stewardship. That means wild harvesting within natural regeneration limits, transitioning toward land-based cultivation that removes pressure from marine ecosystems entirely, and processing locally so that every step of the value chain, from ocean to ingredient - remains within our shores.
Seaweed is not a finite resource when managed with intention. For us, it is not simply a raw material, it is the foundation of a bio-economy that South Africa is uniquely positioned to lead.
Controlled cultivation in land-based raceway ponds
Our Technology Approach
Our seaweed will be cultivated in world-class, land-based raceway ponds. By working on land, we can precisely control water temperature, nutrients and flow, and continuously monitor growth and quality. This gives us a stable, traceable supply of biomass grown under controlled conditions, independent of changing ocean environments.
Advanced, food-grade processing
Our processing lines blend proven traditional techniques with novel process technology. State-of-the-art extraction, filtration and drying equipment help us achieve high purity and consistent gel performance. Our facilities are food-grade and GMP certified, with quality checks built into every step. From raw seaweed to finished ingredient, our process is designed for sustainable production, efficient use of resources and reliable, repeatable quality for food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
Where we operate
Our location strategy is guided by water quality. We believe that the foundation of high-performance seaweed ingredients begins with the precise biological conditions of the environment in which they are grown.
We are currently evaluating sites along the South African coast, targeting the Western Cape and Southern coasts in particular, where seawater nutrient density and existing coastal aquaculture infrastructure support efficient, sustainable cultivation. This flexible, site-selection-driven approach lets us prioritise the best available water conditions, ensuring we don’t commit prematurely to one location until the environmental parameters meet our rigorous standards for extraction quality.
